The Castalia Mercenary Company is a highly disciplined and prominent private military organization based in the trade town of Loriana, within the Kingdom of Ardenia. Led by Commander Zachary Valente, the company serves as the primary stabilizing force in the region.

Unlike typical mercenary bands driven solely by coin, Castalia operates with a strict code of honor and acts as the de facto protector of Ardenia's western and southern borders, deeply intertwined with the nation's survival against internal cults and foreign empires.

History

Origins and the Civil War

The Castalia Mercenary Company was heavily shaped by the aftermath of the Ardenian Civil War twelve years prior to the current events. Zachary Valente, a scion of the purged noble House Valente, chose loyalty to the Kingdom's future over his family's corrupt legacy. He gathered war orphans, veterans, and displaced fighters including Stark, Karl, and Bob to form a company dedicated to restoring and maintaining stability in the war-torn region of Ardenia, especially in Loriana.

The Eclipse Cult Crisis

When the fanatic "Children of the Eclipse" cult, led by Hierarch Solus and his Overseers, seized control of the mining city of Roake and the trade town of Anthill, Castalia spearheaded the resistance. Realizing their forces were stretched thin, Zachary and Princess Adreana initiated the "Coalition of the Unwilling." By promising amnesty, food, and freedom, Castalia successfully united disparate and often hostile factions—including local bandit gangs, the Renjiran beastkin, and foreign mercenaries—into a unified front.

Castalia forces successfully breached Roake, neutralized the mutant "Thralls," and dismantled the cult's leadership, cementing the company's reputation as saviors of the region.

The Albion Invasion

Following the liberation of Roake and the failed peace talks in Merlesia, the Albion Empire led by Knight King Gawain declared outright war on Ardenia. The Castalia Mercenary Company was immediately deployed to the frontlines to hold the Ardan Bridge and the Western Crossroads alongside the Royal Army and the Silver Wolf Mercenaries. During this conflict, Castalia was forced to undergo rapid technological advancements to counter Albion's overwhelming numbers and their elite Wyvern Knights.

The Castalia Mercenary Company is highly structured, capable of executing complex logistical and tactical operations ranging from phalanx defense to asymmetrical warfare.

High Command

• Commander Zachary Valente: The pragmatic, stoic leader of the company. A master tactician who balances political maneuvering with battlefield command.
• Sylvanne Wilde: The boisterous, greatsword-wielding vanguard commander. She often acts as Zachary's right hand and manages the grueling recruitment processes.

Vanguard & Frontline Infantry

The backbone of Castalia's combat strength, utilizing heavily disciplined spear-and-shield phalanxes and heavy cavalry.

A newly formed, highly secretive, and chaotic division operating out of an abandoned bakery/garage in Loriana. They are responsible for propelling Ardenia into an industrial revolution to survive the war.

• Asep Muhammad Ridwan: An otherworlder who provides modern mechanical engineering concepts (such as internal combustion and aerodynamics).
• Treste Comte Mordeau: An exiled alchemist and sorceress from the Grand Sanctuary who translates Asep's concepts into functional magical runic technology.
• Notable Inventions: The "Pulse-Combustion Engine", the Type-1 and Type-2 "Stinger" arbalests, and the SAM-1 (Telekinetically Guided Explosive Projectile).

Artillery and Support

• Eve: Stark's first wife and a highly capable battlemage. Following the Albion invasion, she was reinstated as the Chief Artillery Instructor, tasked with training mages to pilot the newly invented SAM-1 rockets to shoot down Albion Wyvern Knights.

Base of Operations

Castalia is headquartered in Loriana, a vital trade hub located at the confluence of the River Arden and the River Elyn. Their main base is a large, grand red-brick manor with a soaring command tower.

Off-duty mercenaries and command staff frequently gather at the Water Lilies' Embrace, a refined local tavern that serves as an unofficial mess hall, information hub, and resting place.

Foreign Relations and Logistics

Because the Ardenian Royal Army is heavily strained and the Albion Navy blockades the coasts, Castalia relies on a complex web of foreign alliances to maintain their supply lines:

• The Turturici Syndicate: A Sycillian mafia family. Lady Rubia Rossina Turturici (Stark's third wife) smuggles essential medical supplies and rare metals overland through Gallia.
• The Qurtuban Caravans: Merchant Lord Hikam ibn Idris provides massive shipments of grain, spices, and weapons via official trade routes, heavily protected by mercenaries like Rashid.
• Renjiran Tribes: In exchange for Castalia defying Crown Prince Finlay's orders and protecting them from Varyag slavers, the beastkin tribes formed a united front to protect Castalia's eastern mountain flanks.
