Karl is a recurring supporting character in Smoke of Revolution and a core member of Stark's squad within the Castalia Mercenary Company. Known for his impulsive nature, loud personality, and signature green bandana, he serves as the squad's vanguard and often acts as the comedic foil to the more serious members like Stark and Zachary Valente.
Despite his seemingly simple-minded demeanor, Karl possesses a surprising depth of loyalty and emotional intelligence, particularly regarding his comrades. While he presents himself as a carefree bachelor enjoying the mercenary life, it is later revealed that he is a devoted family man with a Caprine (goat/sheep beastfolk) wife and daughter living outside Loriana, a fact he keeps relatively private to protect them.
Appearance
Karl is an athletic man of average height with a lean, muscular build suited for speed and agility. He has messy, spiky brown hair that he rarely bothers to style, kept out of his face by his trademark green bandana tied around his forehead. His face often sports a cheeky grin or a smudge of dirt from training.
His armor is lighter than Stark's, favoring mobility over heavy protection. He typically wears a reinforced leather cuirass over a simple tunic, with metal greaves and gauntlets for essential defense. In Volume 2, he begins incorporating small gadgets from Asep's R&D division, such as flashbangs, into his kit.
Personality
On the surface, Karl is the quintessential hot-blooded mercenary: loud, brash, and always eager for a fight or a drink. He often acts before he thinks, charging enemy lines recklessly and making jokes in inappropriate situations. He has a simple philosophy of life centered around good food, good booze, and protecting his friends.
However, beneath this "muscle-brain" exterior lies a deeply caring individual. He is fiercely protective of his squadmates, treating them like brothers. The death of Bob in Volume 2 devastated him, revealing a somber, grieving side that he usually hides behind bravado. He was the most vocal advocate for Asep pursuing a relationship with Adeline, showing a surprisingly mature understanding of romance and emotional seizing the moment.
History
Early Life & Recruitment
Little is known about Karl's life before joining the company, other than he has been a mercenary for most of his adult life. He met Stark during the chaotic period following the Ardenian Civil War and the two have been inseparable since, forming the core of what would become Stark's Squad under Zachary's command.
Volume 1
Karl was one of the bounty hunters (along with Stark and Bob) who first encountered Asep in Erja village while hunting the sorcerer Borwe. After Asep defeated them in a brief brawl, Karl was the first to warm up to the strange "Otherworlder," respecting Asep's strength. He played a key role during the infiltration of Silvercreek, participating in Asep's "Drunken Fools" diversion which allowed Princess Adreana to enter the town unnoticed.
Volume 2
The death of Bob during the ambush at Greenpasteur Village marked a turning point for Karl. While he maintained his cheerful facade for the sake of morale, he privately mourned his friend deeply. During the Battle of Roake, he served as a key vanguard unit. He rode in the sidecar of Asep's "Davidson Mark I" trike during the liberation of Anthill, providing cover fire and explosives support. In the epilogue, he is the one who pushes Asep to finally confess his feelings to Adeline.
Abilities
Spear Mastery
- Vanguard Specialist: Karl fights with a spear, utilizing a high-speed, aggressive style designed to break enemy formations and create openings for his allies. He lacks the refined technique of a duelist like Brenda but makes up for it with sheer athleticism and unpredictability.
- Adaptability: Despite his reckless reputation, Karl is surprisingly adaptable in combat. He quickly learned to utilize Asep's "modern" tactical items (flashbangs, smoke bombs) and integrates them seamlessly into his spear fighting.
Trivia
- He has a notably high tolerance for alcohol, often being the last one standing during tavern celebrations.
- Unbeknownst to most of the company (excluding Stark), he sends 80% of his earnings back home to his wife, Cecilia.
- He has a distinct fear of Sylvanne, often freezing up or agreeing with whatever she says to avoid "training sessions."
